Antony Gormley (OBE, RA) was born in London in 1950. Having been schooled at Ampleforth College in Yorkshire, he completed a degree in Archaeology, Anthropology and History of Art at Trinity College, Cambridge. Gormley then travelled to India and Sri Lanka studying Buddhism for three years. On returning to London, he attended Central School of Art and Goldsmith's College before completing a postgraduate course in sculpture at the Slade School of Art.

Well known for using his own body as the subject of his work, Antony Gormley frequently explores the relationship between the human body and its environment and with others. Most of his installations have been on a large scale, such as, of course, the Angel of the North and also Quantum Cloud, Domain Field and Event Horizon.

Gormley has had solo and group exhibitions in Europe, Scandinavia, America, Japan and Australia. In 1997, he was awarded the OBE; he is an Honorary Fellow of Trinity College and Jesus College, Cambridge; Trustee of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Turner Prize winner (1994) and Member of the Royal Academy (2003).
