porcelain forms with crystalline glazes.

Richard Bideau studied natural sciences and engineering at university before embarking upon a career as a chemical engineer. At the same time, he maintained an interest in pottery, particularly in the chemistry of glazes.

Richard’s interest in pottery started at an early age, coming from his mother, well-known Lancashire potter Joan Bideau. Initially, this was little more than a way of earning pocket money but this changed in 1995 when he read about crystalline glazes. He was intrigued by the possibility of combining his knowledge of chemistry with the freedom of expression offered by pottery. Richard embarked upon a journey of experimentation that has, after many thousands of tests, resulted in a unique range of crystalline glazes.

‘I spend a lot of time researching and testing new effects and as a result I have developed a unique range of glazes that are distinctly my own.’ Richard says ‘In addition to the glaze, I believe that the form of the pot is very important. I make all my pieces on the potter’s wheel and find that porcelain is the material that shows of the delicacy of the glazes to their best effect.’

Richard now has an international reputation for the quality of his glazes and fine porcelain forms.
