Sarah-Jane was born in County Durham in 1971 to a Hungarian father and English mother. She discovered her love and talent for painting at the tender age of four, she was recovering from eye surgery.

Sarah then went onto study at Harrogate and Cleveland Art Colleges, specializing in illustration and has worked as a freelance artist since 1991. She is known for her exaggerated figures and scrumptious looking food being the focus of her paintings.

Sarah- Jane was noted as saying this about the figures in her work “There is an obsession in our society about appearance; everyone is on a diet or opting for cosmetic improvements: “Why is it we dislike ourselves so much?”

Having suffered from an eating disorder for over twenty years this can be seen as a big emphasis on her instantly recognisable work. The body shapes and the distorted view we see of ourselves.

Sarah-Janes work has been produced in Worcester ceramics as well as prints and books. She has shown all over the United Kingdom and proves to be highly popular.

Balman Gallery now operates primarily as a web based site. We are grateful, however, to have some work on display at the Hancock Gallery in Newcastle. See their website for more details of their current exhibitions or contact us for details of our current work on display there.
